Is Conspiracy Theorist Alex Jones Considering Filing for Bankruptcy?

Radio host Alex Jones has filed for bankruptcy after being hit with several civil lawsuits. Bloomberg (1) reported that Jones, who is widely known as a conspiracy theorist and for calling the Sandy Hook school shooting a “hoax,” is facing hefty fines after missing a court-ordered deposition connected to the defamation lawsuits that were filed against him.

Jones will also be required to pay an undetermined amount in damages to the families on the winning side of that case. Because Jones will soon be required to dish out a sizable amount of money, his businesses have decided to file for bankruptcy in the meantime.

Filing for bankruptcy will give Alex Jones time to weigh his finances amid discussion of lawsuit settlement amounts.

For years, Alex Jones referred to the Sandy Hook school shooting as a “hoax” and because of it, has misled many into believing it didn’t actually happen. After growing tired of watching Jones’ opinions affect others, many families of the victims filed defamation lawsuits against him and his companies.

Although Jones claimed that the lawsuits aimed to “silence [his] free speech on matters,” he failed to provide evidence that may have helped him win his case. As a result, Jones will be expected to satisfy damages (once the amounts are determined) and pay court fines and fees. To avoid interruptions with his businesses, three companies owned by Jones, including Infowars, have decided to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (2).

“A Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing [will] allow Jones’ businesses, such as Infowars and Free Speech Systems, to keep operating while pausing civil litigation against them.”
