Former California Congresswoman Katie Hill Files for Bankrutpcy

After Katie Hill victoriously won herself a Congressional seat in 2018, things appeared to have taken an awkward turn down south for the politician. A year after being elected, and winning the hearts of voters in a “traditional GOP congressional district,” according to the Los Angeles Times (1), Hill went through a divorce and faced scrutiny over nude photos published by the British tabloid, Daily Mail.

Following having the nude photos made available for public view without her permission, Hill took to the courts, seeking justice for being exploited. Hill filed a revenge porn lawsuit against the Daily Mail and two journalists, though she was unsuccessful at winning, primarily “because of a “public interest” exemption in the law, cites the Los Angeles Times.

After being ordered to pay more than $300,000 in attorneys’ fees, Katie Hill opted to file for bankruptcy.

After Katie Hill’s unsuccessful attempt at suing the Daily Mail among other parties, the court ordered her to pay roughly $273,000 in attorneys’ fees to “the parent companies of the Daily Mail and Red State, and journalists Jennifer Van Laar and Joe Messina.” She also reportedly owed her attorneys about $100,000.

Given the financial burden the revenge porn lawsuit placed on Hill, she turned to the bankruptcy courts for help. On July 12, 2022, Hill shared with the public in a tweet that she  “incurred substantial financial loss to fight this case” which ultimately led to her having to file for bankruptcy (2).

Depending on the outcome of the bankruptcy filing, Hill could be relieved of having to pay the defendants the hundreds of thousands of dollars the court ordered her to pay up.
