Alex Jones Has Now Filed For Personal Bankruptcy

Infowars founder Alex Jones has filed for bankruptcy, and this time, it’s personal. Just a few months back, Jones was ordered to pay roughly $50 million in damages to some victims and the families impacted by the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting massacre. That verdict came after Jones was sued over the many years he spent broadcasting to the public that the massacre was staged and didn’t actually occur.

Around the same time the Sandy Hook defamation case was playing out, Jones’ company, Free Speech Systems, filed for bankruptcy. Now, the far-right conspiracy theorist is seeking protection for himself.

Alex Jones filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Texas.

On December 2, 2022, CNN reported that Jones had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a Texas court (1). In the court documents, Jones reportedly listed his assets to be worth between $1 to $10 million and his liabilities to be between $1 and $10 billion. CNN says Jones filed the petition shortly after his request to reduce the $50 million damages he was ordered to pay was denied.

In addition to the $50 million, Jones was also ordered to pay about $1.4 billion for his case in Connecticut involving eight of the families and a first responder who were affected by the Sandy Hook shooting.

How does Chapter 11 bankruptcy work?

Under Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which is often referred to as a ‘reorganization” bankruptcy, a debtor remains in possession of their assets and can borrow new money (2). The overall goal of Chapter 11 bankruptcy is for a debtor to create a repayment plan so that they are able to settle their unpaid debt and emerge debt-free.

When a person files for bankruptcy, an automatic stay goes into effect. This means collection efforts, foreclosures, and repossessions are suspended. Although Chapter 11 bankruptcy is typically used by business owners, an individual is also able to seek relief from their accrued debt.
